Battle Scars
Don't look like they're fading
“Trudy I’m home!” Knocking on the door, Damian realized that he wasn’t actually home, he was at someone else’s home. A very rich someone. A very rich someone that was also his best friend’s employer. One may think that he’d be a little more gracious, that he may even be a good friend and not disrupt his friend while he was at work. That one would not know Damian at all if they expected as much. He wasn’t a good friend, he was a friend, the kind that raised hell and made things more difficult for everyone else for the shear fun of it.
He knocked again a little harder and huffed. Being the attention-seeker that he was, Damian expected Hunter to drop everything upon his arrival. He was finally back in the States after nine months of deployment. It was one of the only ones that Damian had done without Hunter by his side.
Initially, Damian had been considered for the very job that his best friend was given. It wasn’t until the higher ups took a look at how Damian acted in a professional environment that didn’t have people constantly shooting at him or trying to blow him up that they realized Hunter was probably a better candidate. He was more of a stickler for the rules, meanwhile Damian had been trying to get him to break the rules for years.
He wound up for one more knock before the door was opened and he looked into the familiar blue eyes of his stick in the mud best friend. Damian smiled brightly and spread his arms open, “Hiya baby boy, did you miss me? I know, I know, you’re shocked that I’m here, but you had to know I’d figure out where you were through somebody. I’m your right hand...er, scratch that. I know what you do with that hand, I’d rather be the left. It gets less, uh, less attention.” Damian waggled his eyebrows and smirked.

so here i go
Bid farewell to yesterday
Things at the Spencer house had gotten better. At least for Hunter and Charlotte. SM West was still stoic as ever and if she saw how close him and Charlotte had gotten, she didn't say anything. Hunter knew he was stepping out of line with the relationship he had started with Charlotte but she needed him and frankly, if he wasn't there to help her then what was he there for?
There were still boundaries of course, ones Hunter had put up because he knew if he didn't, he'd be in even more trouble but Charlotte was smart and gracious enough to concede to them. He'd see her almost throwing caution to the wind but she'd pull back at the last minute much to his appreciation.
Nightly room visits had become a regular thing and even though nothing but talking happened, Hunter knew she appreciated it on some level.
The sudden arrival of his best friend was something Hunter had not expected in the slightest. And as he heard the door banging, Hunter cringed and cursed under his breath before excusing himself from Charlotte and bounding down the stairs two at a time before anyone could get to the door.
Damian's spiel made Hunter roll his eyes and groan before he grabbed the other man by his arm and dragged him out to the courtyard in the middle of the whole tirade of words.
Once they were away from the main entrance, Hunter looked around to see whether anyone was looking to find that there weren't any. He released a breath and turned to look back at Damian with a raised eyebrow. "Why. Why are you here." Hunter asked, exasperated. Truthfully, he did miss Damian. They'd been inseparable since they were teenagers so his nine month deployment did put a damper in Hunter's mood. That didn't mean he appreciated Damian crashing through his place of work yelling out absurdities, even though Hunter expected it.

Battle Scars
Don't look like they're fading
Hunter's reaction was to be expected. Damian knew he was crossing a line given the fact that this was Hunter's job and he was in the midst of babysitting. He was led out to some courtyard and he was a little disappointed because said courtyard did not have any pretty heiresses around. It wasn't as though he was completely sheltered from who the job was for. The Spencer name was huge and he'd seen plenty of pictures of the youngest Spencer due to her more reckless stunts. What could he say, he had a thing for the pretty reckless ones. She may have been a little young, but she was hot.
His arm was released and he shifted his weight, his arms folding across his chest and his face set in a pout, "I'm really hurt, bubba. Here I thought you'd be happy to see me. It's only been nine months which is long enough to grow a human, but ya know, that's nothing. Not like I coulda died or anything. Harsh, Trudy, very harsh." Damian sniffled for good measure before cracking into a smile. He actually didn't care all that much about Hunter's reaction to him being there.
As an answer, he shrugged, "Got home last night, figured I'd come see my buddy hard at work. It isn't like West is going to cut my nuts off, they need my ability too much on the front line. Besides, I was careful and made sure she wasn't here." Damian narrowed his eyes at Hunter, "Now onto more serious questions; where's Miss Priss that you're looking out for? Is she as hot in person as she is in tabloids? Has to be kind of awkward telling her sexual partners that she can't come out to play anymore."

Bid farewell to yesterday
Damian's response to being dragged had Hunter rolling his eyes with a ghost of a smile playing on his lips. "You sound like a needy baby, Damian." Hunter said before Damian went on another spiel. He was right, of course. As unprofessional as Damian was, he was absolutely valuable to their troop. Both of them together on the field had more impact than any weapon. SM West would have to literally be out of her mind to do any harm to Damian. Not to mention what Hunter would do to her.
When Damian started talking smack about Charlotte, an unexpected bile of anger started to rise in Hunter as he frowned at Hunter's words. "Careful there, Oliver." He said. He only used Damian's last name to indicate how far Damian was going. Which surprisingly wasn't too often. He had a very high tolerance of Damian's bullshit compared to everyone else. Having grown up with him and going through the military with him, Hunter took Damian's behaviour in stride when so many others couldn't deal with him.
So for Hunter to use his last name, Damian would know how serious he was being. Which was probably not the wisest decision Hunter had made.

Battle Scars
Don't look like they're fading
Damian could give a fuck less about some rich snob. Even if he had gotten the job, there was a very low chance of him caring about her at all, and he was the one who consistently was out to break rules. Hunter was the good boy. He was the star that everyone just immediately gravitated towards. It would make sense for her to want to be around him, but for Hunter to react the way that he had, well, it could only mean one thing. Damian was dense, he knew as much, but he also knew his best friend and Hunter hardly ever snapped at him for the things he said.
His eyebrow arched and he shifted his weight again, leaning back so that he could look at Hunter better. He noted the differences in his best friend from the way he'd left him nine months ago. If it hadn't been for Hunter's reaction, he may not have ever figured out why, but his best friend made it perfectly clear as to why he'd had such a bad taste in his mouth over what Damian had said. His hand went over his mouth and he laughed once, "No fucking way."
Damian took a few glances around just to be sure for his buddy's sake before leaning in, "You're fucking compromised aren't you? Hunter, buddy, breaking the rules is my thing. What the hell are you doing?"

Hunter wasn't quick enough to notice his response until he saw Damian's reaction to it. He'd just given himself away to the one person who would and could torment him about it forever. He could have punched himself right then and there if Damian's words didn't already do that.
"Jesus Christ, Damian." His shoulders slumped and he raised one hand over his face, wiping it slowly. He couldn't deny it because Damian would see right through it but admitting to it was worst.
"I'm not compromised." He said after a long pause. "She just needs...someone to talk to." Hunter looked back up at his best friend and rolled his eyes. "I don't have to explain myself. You, unfortunately, do. Now can we please go back to why you're here? A phone call couldn't be enough?"
He knew Damian wasn't going to back off from the topic but he could try to dissuade him as much as possible. Try being the operative word.

Battle Scars
Don't look like they're fading
Damian snorted at his buddy's denial. Of course Damian also knew that Hunter was a professional and he could make things work even if he was too far in. His excuses were pointless and nothing he said was changing Damian's mind. The fact that he didn't even want to talk about it just made it that much more clear. It was so unlike Hunter to risk his job, to risk anything. Least of all for a girl. "Oh no. We're doing this. This is happening," He shoved his best friend playfully. "You've gotta be kidding me, dude. A girl? You're risking this shit for a fucking prima donna? What the hell are you going to do if you get fired?" He didn't even want to know if the girl reciprocated his feelings for her.
His hands raised in surrender, "I really just came to see you. Another deployment has already been talked about and, ya know, this last one just wasn't the same. I needed my brother, alright? And from the sounds of it, you need me too." Damian placed his hand on his forehead and shook his head back and forth, "I don't even know what to say, man. You're supposed to be the responsible one!"

Bid farewell to yesterday
As predicted, Damian was like a dog with a bone. He listened as Damian cursed his way through his words and the thought of being fired made Hunter laugh. Like he hadn't agonised over it for the whole nine months he had been working here.
When Damian spoke of another deployment, Hunter's heart sank. "Seriously? Another one?" Hunter asked, running his fingers through his hair before sighing when he was reminded that he was supposed to be the responsible one between the two. Wynn would probably be on Damian's side too if she was here.
The damned thing was that Hunter knew all of this. He had been torturing himself over the past months he'd been here. Whatever fears Damian had, Hunter already had. But Charlotte had slowly become important to him. Damian was also right about one thing. He did need his brother.
Sighing, he closed the gap between them and pulled Damian into a bone crushing hug. "It's good to see you man. It really is." If they had met again under any different circumstance, Hunter would have shown a more positive reaction to seeing his best friend.
"I'm not going to compromise this job, okay? I...I know what I'm doing." Hunter said with a less than certain tone of voice.

Battle Scars
Don't look like they're fading
Damian's ramblings were more for his benefit at this point. He knew Hunter well enough to know that the other man had been going over and over in his head the worst outcomes of this situation. He was always a step ahead of Damian on most things and it was no surprise that he'd be ahead of this, too. The girl must not have known or must not have reciprocated because Hunter seemed certain of the way things would play out in these circumstances.
His shoulders lifted in a shrug at his best friend's response to the next deployment. It was what he'd signed up for and having the ability that he did, he was an asset that they tended to need at every turn. Not everybody could walk into a hostile territory without worrying about being blown to shreds. Damian knew what his place was in the military and it was nothing that he hadn't wished for years ago. If he died, he died. And if he lived, well, he lived to see the next deployment. Hunter's job wasn't something Damian thought he was cut out for. Babysitting had never really been his thing. Less so when it was babysitting a prissy rich girl.
Damian hugged his best friend back and gave him a pat, "It's good to see you, too, baby boy." As he pulled back, he placed his hand on Hunter's shoulder and gave it a squeeze, "Look, you know me. I'm not the lecturer here. I'm just worried about what you've gotten yourself into." He grinned and shook his head, "But you're the brains of our pair, I know you've got it under control. However, I gotta meet her. She's here right?"

Bid farewell to yesterday
Damian's nonchalant shrug about deployment brought out two emotions from Hunter; understanding and concern. Understanding because if Hunter had turned down this job, he would be in the exact same position. Concern because Damian didn't actually value his life as much as anybody else.
Glad that for the most part, Damian was backing down, Hunter laughed lightly at his response before his smile dropped at the thought of him meeting Charlotte. "What? No, you're not meeting her." Hunter shook his head. There was no way it would end up well for Hunter if Charlotte and Damian were in the same room.
"You have to go back. I'll meet up when I have a day off." Hunter pushed Damian in the direction of the gate, knowing full well Damian was going to be sneaky about it if he didn't physically remove him from the premise.

Battle Scars
Don't look like they're fading
The emotional response from Hunter was to be expected. He may not have said anything, but it was always written all over his face. At least, for those who knew him it was. Damian was well aware of the concern his best friend had for him and the way he went into deployments not caring about coming back or not. Fact of the matter was that he'd tried damn near everything when he was younger, just to see what his body could withstand. If he'd died then, it made no difference to him than if he died now. He kept his mouth shut about the topic though, pushing it away for another day when Hunter was ready to lecture him.
"Oh c'mon, Hunt!" He didn't see the big deal. It wasn't as though Damian was careless enough to tell the girl that his best friend had the hots for her. If anything, he just wanted to understand what it was about her that made Hunter of all people go slack. Hunter began pushing him towards the gate and Damian pushed back in return, wanting desperately to find this girl that had turned his best friend upside down.
Damian groaned, "What's the worst that could happen? I tell her and she returns your sappy bullshit? Or that she doesn't? Or what if I don't tell her at all and she falls for me? C'mon dude, you know none of that is gonna happen. Just let me meet her. Five minutes, please? C'mon." He was shoved all the way to the gate and he frowned. It was hardly fair for Hunter to have that kind of dirt and not even let Damian meet the girl of his dreams. Damian had always been a little concerned as far as dating went for Hunter. Especially after being shot. "Duuuude, c'mon!."

Damian was physically stronger than Hunter, something the former always lorded over him. Usually Hunter didn't mind because he had quicker reflexes but this time, he cursed Damian for his physique. Pushing him proved to be harder than he had thought. But Hunter was determined. He did not want his two worlds colliding. Especially not like this.
As Damian argued his case, Hunter just didn't want to listen. Damian had to understand that this was a highly unusual request, and one that shouldn't even be entertained because he was working. But of course, he was Damian. Since when did logic ever pervaded his conscience?
Hunter wasn't concerned about Charlotte falling for Damian. He could even see it happening because if he recalled correctly, Charlotte had been looking for a guy like Damian to be her bodyguard when he first started. No, his concern was Charlotte finding out what Hunter was really like. Damian was not a secretive guy. He blurted out whatever that popped into his head. He knew every dirty little secret Hunter had. He didn't want Damian colouring Charlotte's opinion of him.
Seeing no other option, Hunter sent the heel of his palm up Damian's nose. It wasn't enough to make him bleed, just enough to stop him from pushing against Hunter. "Dude, seriously, you were so concerned about me getting fired and now you want to meet her?"

Battle Scars
Don't look like they're fading
The palm to the nose had Damian covering his face and shoving Hunter away, "You cock-sucking mother fucker. What was that for!" Tears had sprung to his eyes automatically and he stepped away, pulling his hand back to check for any spray of blood or any sign that it was broken. There was no way that he was letting it go now. His best friend had just hit him over this girl that he was supposedly protecting. Now he had to know who she was. He tried to clear the tears from his eyes, and glanced around to see what his best route would be, but before he could make any movements, he noted someone peeking out the door that he'd been pushed through to get to the courtyard.
She was small, no taller than a fifth grader, but she was beautiful. Her hair was dark and her eyes were insanely blue. And suddenly Damian could sort of understand. She looked frail, but there was obvious strength behind her. It became more obvious when she rushed out and into the mix.
"What is going on? Who are you?" Her eyes darted from him to Hunter and he noted the way she lingered on his best friend. Her eyes dropping to his hand and then back up to Damian's nose. Observant, he could appreciate that.
Damian shook his head to clear the tears away again and laughed, "Well, well, well. Look who's here, bubba." He stuck his hand out and offered it to her, "I'm Damian, a friend of Hunter's. Well, actually, more like a brother, wouldn't you say baby boy?"

Hunter flinched and immediately apologised to Damian for the hit but before he could push Damian further away from the house, he heard Charlotte's voice from behind. He froze and cursed under his breath. He didn't even have time to explain when Damian started on her. Hunter wanted to push him away but he had already shook Charlotte's hand.
He glared at Damian before turning to face Charlotte.
"He's my army buddy. And...uh yeah unfortunately he's the annoying parts of having a brother." He snorted. "He was just about to leave, actually. Right, Damian?" he placed a hand on Damian's chest, looking at him with a warning glare. "Thanks for dropping by, we'll meet up later won't we, Damian?"

Battle Scars
Don't look like they're fading
Damian was watching his best friend closely. Every mannerism, the way his tone changed, the way he looked at her, he was watching so closely to see if anyone else would be able to find out that he had fallen for her. He didn't want anyone to see it other than him and by the looks of it, nobody would. While Hunter's tone had softened when he spoke to the girl in front of them, nothing else gave too much away. Damian flashed his best friend a smile at his words about being an annoying brother.
Charlotte gave him a once over just as he'd done with her and he had to wonder what she saw. Her eyes gave nothing away and he felt a little uneasy as she looked at him. Odd given the fact that nothing really scared him. She looked back at Hunter and her eyebrows pulled together, "Why's he leaving? He just got here." Her eyes turned back to him and she gave a small smile, "You can come in, if you want."
Damian grinned wider at Hunter and it dissolved into a smirk, "I would love to. It's been nine months, we have a lot to catch up on. And I can fill you in on all the fun things you probably don't know about my good buddy here." Charlotte seemed to catch his smile and she looked at Hunter a little uncertainly. She didn't want to upset him, he could see it all over her face that she was trying to make sure he wasn't upset about her offer.
